Tips to Prepare Your Arizona Home for Monsoon Season

Arizona’s monsoon season typically begins in June and lasts through September. Monsoon season brings high winds, heavy rains, high humidity, thunder and lightning, flash flooding, dust storms, and hail. Without proper preparation, your home may be at risk of damage during monsoon storms. When you take the time to prepare your home for the monsoon season, you can reduce or prevent damage. Here are some tips for protecting your home from monsoon storms in Arizona.

Inspect and Repair Your Roof and Gutters

In mid- to late May, you should schedule a professional roofing inspection and have any damage repaired. Roof problems will only get worse during monsoon season, and you could be at risk of roof leaks, mold or mildew, and water damage. You should also inspect your gutters, downspouts, and drainage systems to prevent flooding and foundation damage. Repair any damage and clean your gutters of debris and dirt.

Trim Trees and Bushes

Make sure all trees and bushes are trimmed. You should not have any trees that overhang your roof. If any trees have damaged, broken, or diseased limbs, have them professionally removed. If any trees are growing up into power lines, have them professionally trimmed. If you notice that trees on public land or city-owned property are growing into the power lines, call the appropriate city agency to let them know.

Keep Your Yard Free of Debris and Fragile Items

Keep your yard clean and free of debris during monsoon season. This will lower your risk of fire and reduce your post-storm cleanup. You should also remove fragile or lightweight items from your yard that could become projectiles in high wind, such as lawn furniture, umbrellas, toys, bicycles, trampolines, tents, and lawn ornaments.
